One of our favorite excursions is to Piedra Falls, a waterfall secluded away in the forest of the Piedra River valley. The drive to the trailhead is an adventure in itself, winding our way through the San Juan National Forest. First, we'll negotiate through a maze of wild volcanic spires and interesting geologic formations.
The short hike to the trailhead is easy and filled with lush beauty and aroma of the surrounding pine, spruce and fir forest. In the distance you'll hear the roar of the falls.
Once there, standing at the base of the falls, the cool mists will get you charged up with the earth vibrant energies. Bring your camera, because this is truly a Kodak Moment!
After charging your spiritual batteries under the falls, we'll recharge your physical body with a lunch stop in Pagosa Springs at a local restaurant.
Then, it's on to Williams Lake. This lake is a prize jewel, nestled in the high Rocky Mountains, at the base of the Continental Divide.
Onward and upward to our next adventure, the Ice Caves Canyon. The hike traverses the sandstone ridges which were cut by the Piedra River. The pleasant, riverside trail takes us into the canyon where you'll be surrounded by overhanging cliffs and vertical ice caves.
Your naturalist guide knows the local flora and fauna and will point out the numerous edible and medicinal plants along the trail.

Tour departs in early morning from the Wyndham Activities Center in Pagosa Springs.
Our route will take us across the Continental Divide at Wolf Creek Pass and an elevation of 10,850 feet. We'll have stops at the scenic overlook and Treasure Falls. Your historian guide/driver will tell you about the pioneer and mining history, and the edible and medicinal plants in the region.
We'll pass the Wolf Creek Ski Area, and then descend into the Rio Grande Valley on the other side of the Divide. From there, we'll follow the Rio Grande River north to Creede.
Creede was once a thriving silver mining district with more than 10,000 residents. Today, since all of the mines have closed, the town has 400 hardy souls living at an elevation of 8,852 feet.
Your guide will tell the tales about Wyatt Earp, the notorious Soapy Smith gang that ran the town until their luck ran out, the petrified man scandal, Calamity Jane and her gambling partner, Poker Alice Tubbs.
We'll visit the Creede Underground Mining Museum just north of town that was developed by miners and Creede residents. This unique museum is in a mining tunnel and is an underground walk through the history of hard rock mining. We'll also visit the old town site of Bachelorville.
We'll drive through narrow Willow Creek Canyon, just north of Creede to view the remains of the Commodore, the Amethyst and the Kentucky Belle silver mines. Set high on the canyon walls, these are some of the most picturesque mines in the west.
We'll break for a hearty lunch in Creede, and after lunch, you'll have a myriad of choices. Photographers will enjoy wandering around town and taking in the old sites that remain pretty much the same as they were in 1892 after the big fire. Don't forget to visit the pioneer cemetery on Boot Hill and Creede's notorious men and women who are buried there.
For shoppers, you'll love Creede's boutiques, handmade crafts, original jewelry designs, art galleries, antiques, music boxes, hand blown glass, unusual pottery, gifts and other collector's items.
Tours which include the matinee performance at the Creede Repertory Theatre are available during theater season which runs from mid-July through August, on Wednesdays only. The theater, which was founded in 1966, is renowned throughout the west for its excellent plays that are suitable for the whole family.
The Creede tour is a fun, relaxing trip with options for everyone. Please join us for a taste of the silver rush days and, truly, a trip back in time!

Tour departs in early morning from the Wyndham Activities Center in Pagosa Springs.
We'll travel in comfort in our 4-wheel drive vehicle, crossing the Divide at Wolf Creek Pass and stopping at the scenic overlooks and Treasure Falls.
Over the pass, we'll turn into the San Juan National Forest and climb the old gravel road into the high country to reach the 1800's mining town of Summitville at 12,000 feet elevation. We'll leave the present behind as we view the old school, hotel, church, and miners' cabins. You'll be able to imagine just what life was like from the late 1870's to the turn of the 20th century.
Just past Summitville, we'll head to the top of a 12,602 foot mountain for a panoramic, eagle's eye view of mountain ranges up to 150 miles away. Herds of elk are often sighted in the meadows below. The wildflowers of the alpine tundra blanket the meadows with a rainbow of colors, contrasting sharply with nearby snowfields. Photographers will go wild on this mountain top.
Next, we'll head out over Summit and Elwood Passes, both of which are over 11,800 feet tall, to a shimmering alpine pond where we'll stop for our picnic lunch.
On the trip we'll stop at miners' cabins, waterfalls, and we'll ramble through the forests and meadows. Our guides are well versed and anxious to share their knowledge about the wildflowers and edible and medicinal plants.

Tour departs in early morning from the Wyndham Activities Center in Pagosa Springs.
We'll have an adventure on the way to the trailhead over an old 4 x 4 logging road as we wind up the mountain through the beautiful aspen, spruce and fir forest.
Then, we'll set off on foot, following the elk and game trails as we move up into the high forest. Our pace will be leisurely to allow for the rugged terrain.
Marmots, golden eagles, and mule deer are abundant on the mountain, and we might even get a glimpse of an elk or two if we're lucky. Your guide will point out edible and medicinal plants along the way and assist with wildflower identification.
Incredible panoramic views of the entire Continental Divide await you at the summit. From there, you'll see craggy, snow-covered peaks, peaceful meadows, velvet forests, and Chimney Rock. You name it! Visibility is often over 100 miles on a clear day.
We'll also eat lunch at the summit, and you will have earned every bit of it! This spectacular, exhilarating adventure will reward you grandly for your hardwork and efforts!
And, you'll find that going down the mountain is much easier and quicker than the hike up.
